Visiting the Mitten

I've gotten back in the habit of saying "pop" instead of "soda." My hair has transformed into a mass of curls from the last week of humidity. A dollar bought 6 ears of sweet corn, and I've had to shoo away mosquitoes and moths while outside at night. I have to remember to set aside empty pop bottles so my mom can bring them back to the store to get the deposits back - 10 cents a bottle adds up!

All of this can happen in only one place:

MICHIGAN

I've spent most of my days in Fremont. Land of baby food...literally. It's the birthplace of Gerber Baby Food. The majority of Fremont's population works at the baby food plant, including my mom. In fact, baby food is such a part of Fremont's heritage that there is a National Baby Food Festival every summer. It just so happens that it's going on this very week. Think I'm lying? Check out www.nbff.org and see for yourself!

It's probably hard to imagine, but Fremont has more than just baby food going for it. Just a quarter mile down the road from my parents' house is Fremont Lake. We went out on Uncle Stan's boat last weekend and traveled around the entire perimeter. The weather was perfect.
Luckily these swans weren't of the kamikaze variety that tend to roam the lake.

This is a great view of the lake, and it's hard to believe that it was about 8:30 pm when this photo was taken. One annoyance of coming to Michigan is getting used to the Eastern time zone and the freakishly late sunsets. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to have more hours of daylight. But, it doesn't help me get used to the time difference! At 9 pm it looks like 6 or 7 pm in Arizona, and suddenly....poof! It's dark outside and almost time to go to sleep. Then I have trouble dragging myself out of bed at 9 am here, although it's only 6 am in AZ. I guess I will be glad of it when school starts in a little over a week when I have to get up at 5:45 am...bummer!

Momma and Me

It's been an eventful but surprisingly relaxing vacation from the heat in Arizona. I'm hoping that these summer visits to Michigan can become a tradition.

  1. It's beautiful there! I'm so glad you got to visit family this summer, even with your healing knee!
