According to Wikipedia, a
haboob is a, "type of intense duststorm commonly observed in arid regions throughout the world."
We experienced at least three of these storms in 2011 alone; each storm reached over 4,000 feet high and engulfed the city of Phoenix and surrounding areas. I was able to snap a few photos from our back yard during the last occurrence.

Notice that we had to weigh the pool rafts down by putting the lawn chairs on top of them because of the extreme winds.
