Cabin Time in God's Country

I started going up to the family's cabin when I was about 5 years old. Growing up, our family would go up almost every summer. I mean my whole family...sisters, parents, grandpa, aunts, uncles, and cousins. The cabin has been in the family since the 1930s. Fortunately, my dad and grandpa decided to build a larger cabin in 1995. Although it's bigger, it's still missing many "standard" amenities.

Cabin Stats:
  • 0 running water
  • 0 electricity
  • 1 outhouse
  • 1 outdoor shower, including blue tarp as shower curtain
  • 1,000 mosquitoes (not bad this year)
  • 1 million unusually large mutant flies
  • 2 bedrooms
  • 1 loft
  • 1 propane refrigerator
  • 1 generator
  • 1 tv with satellite, usable with generator
  • 1 wood stove
  • 50% cell phone reception

Bugs Galore!
Some might think that staying in what is basically the middle of nowhere would be boring. Not true. We kept ourselves busy and had lots of fun!

Nick and my dad did some electrical work. They ran a wire from the generator in the shed to the cabin. Say goodbye to the extension cord through the window! Now there is an electrical box inside the cabin that we can plug the TV into.

Pictured above is our wonderful shower. The spigot is attached to the tree and has a hose that runs to the blue barrel of water in the background. My dad attached a pump, so when you turn on the pump water comes out the shower head. Nick added a nice little log for us to set our shampoo and soap. All you have to do is hang the blue tarp as a shower curtain and voila, you have a completely functional shower.

This was one of the "hillbilliest" ideas Nick has ever had! My cousin Jon brought my grandpa's old bowling ball up to use as a shooting target. However, Nick invented "Yooper Bowling." Ten small logs are the pins, and we must reset the pins manually. It was pretty fun!

Nick also learned how to build a campfire. Of course, it had already died down by the time I snapped this photo.

Then we had a little target practice before heading off to the lake for the afternoon. I preferred the .22 pistol to the rifle. Although I'm a little nervous about guns, I have to admit I'm a pretty good shot!

One of the best things about the cabin is the wildlife and scenery. No wonder the UP is known as God's Country.

Nick wasn't fast enough to get a clear photo...

    1. Wow, Stacey, that is roughing it! Very impressive. And the outhouse pictures are weird and very, very entertaining.
